License Upgrade

This page describes how to request and apply a license upgrade for SIWENOID v2. A license upgrade is required when the current license limits need to be increased — for example, when expanding an installation with more datapoints, adding additional client workstations, or adding additional server nodes.

The SIWENOID v2 license is stored on a USB hardware key (dongle) and defines the following operational limits:

  • Datapoint count — the maximum number of datapoints (physical monitoring and control points from connected subsystems) that can be active in the system simultaneously.
  • Client count — the maximum number of SIWENOID v2 client applications that can connect to the server simultaneously.
  • Server count — the maximum number of SIWENOID v2 server instances that can participate in a synchronised multi-server configuration.

The current license values are visible in the server status window. If an installation grows beyond the licensed limits, a license upgrade must be requested from the SIWENOID licensing authority before the additional capacity becomes available.

If the USB dongle is removed from the server, SIWENOID v2 continues to operate normally for a grace period of 48 hours before it stops functioning.

To perform a license upgrade, the following are required:

  • SIWENOID License Utility — a separate application included in the SIWENOID v2 installer package. If it has not been installed, run the installer again and select the License Utility component. See SIWENOID v2 Installation.
  • Internet connection — the license upgrade request and approval are processed over the internet by the SIWENOID licensing server. The internet connection must be available on the machine where the License Utility is running and where the USB dongle is connected.

If the SIWENOID v2 server machine does not have internet access, the upgrade can be performed from a different computer:

  1. Shut down the SIWENOID v2 License Service on the server.
  2. Remove the USB dongle from the server machine.
  3. Connect the USB dongle to any other Windows computer that has internet access.
  4. Install the SIWENOID License Utility on that computer (using the SIWENOID v2 installer).
  5. Perform the upgrade request from that computer as described below.
  6. After approval, move the dongle back to the server and restart the License Service.

Start the SIWENOID License Utility on the machine where the USB dongle is connected.

SIWENOID License Utility — connected state

Wait until the status message “Connected to the SIWENOID License server” is displayed. This confirms that the License Utility has successfully communicated with the licensing server over the internet and is ready to process requests.

If the connected status does not appear, check that:

  • The USB dongle is properly connected and recognised by Windows.
  • The machine has a working internet connection.
  • No firewall or proxy is blocking outbound connections from the License Utility.

License key details and upgrade request screen

  1. In the License Utility, select the USB key from the list of detected devices (item 1).
  2. Click the yellow arrow button to load the current license parameters for the selected key.

The current license details are displayed, showing the active limits for datapoint count, client count, and server count. These values reflect what is currently programmed on the USB dongle.

Modify the license parameters to the new required values:

  • Datapoint count — enter the new total number of datapoints required. This must be at least equal to the current licensed count; it cannot be reduced below the existing limit.
  • Client count — enter the new maximum number of simultaneous client connections required.
  • Server count — enter the new maximum number of simultaneous server instances required.

After entering the new values, click Send to submit the upgrade request to the SIWENOID licensing authority.

Important: Submitting the request does not immediately apply the upgrade. The request must be reviewed and approved by the SIWENOID licensing authority. Approval is not automatic — it requires prior commercial agreement with the SIWENOID vendor. Contact SIWENOID support before submitting the request to confirm the upgrade has been authorised.

If the USB dongle has been moved from the server to another machine for this process, inform SIWENOID support of this before requesting approval, as the approval process verifies the dongle's location.

License Utility — Process and Maintenance screen

Once approval has been granted by the licensing authority (confirmed via the SIWENOID support channel), return to the License Utility and:

  1. Click Process.
  2. Then click Maintenance.

The License Utility will contact the licensing server, verify the approval, and write the updated license parameters to the USB dongle. The upgrade is complete when the utility confirms the update has been applied successfully.

After the upgrade:

  • If the dongle was temporarily moved to another machine, shut down the License Utility, remove the dongle, reconnect it to the SIWENOID v2 server, and restart the License Service.
  • Verify the new license limits in the SIWENOID v2 server status window to confirm the upgrade has taken effect.
  • The license upgrade process requires an active internet connection at the time of both the request (Step 3) and the application (Step 4). Both steps communicate with the SIWENOID licensing server.
  • SIWENOID v2 operates for 48 hours without the USB dongle before shutting down. Do not leave the dongle disconnected from the production server for extended periods.
  • License parameters can only be increased, not decreased. Once a higher limit has been licensed, it cannot be downgraded.
  • Keep a record of the license parameters (datapoint count, client count, server count) and the dongle serial number in the site documentation. This information is required if the dongle is lost or needs replacement.
